How To Make An At-Home Hydroponic System

So you’ve read about hydroponics and now you want to set up one of your own? Learning how to make a hydroponic system is actually easy. But that’s only true if you stick to the simplest system first.

This means you’ll need to start with a water culture system. It’s relatively affordable compared to the other systems, and it’s much simpler too. This is a system that uses a Styrofoam platform to float your plants directly over the nutrient solution. With this system, a container of 5 gallons of water can help you grow about 5 plants.

1. Find a container you can use for the water nutrient solution. This can be a mere bucket or even a fish tank. Just make sure that light can go through the container. If it is transparent, you can paint it black. If it’s an aquarium you may want to reuse later, just wrap it with thick black trash bags.

You don’t want light to come in because that just promotes algae growth that steals nutrients from your plants. The container should also have the same area dimensions (length and width) from top to bottom.  (more…)

How Does A Hydroponic System Work?

A hydroponic system is a way of growing plants indoors without the use of soil. It offers many advantages, and that includes how very little waste it produces that can harm the environment. But how does hydroponic system really work?

There’s really no simple answer to that question, due to the fact that there are several ways of designing a hydroponic system. But here are some of the more common systems, as well as a brief explanation of how each one works.

Water Culture

This is an active system, which means that it involves some moving parts. But of all the active systems, this one is the simplest. It’s mostly used for lettuce, as this is a water plant that grows very quickly.

You have a floating platform with plants, with the platform usually made of Styrofoam. This floats directly over the nutrient solution, which is usually an aquarium. There’s an airstone on the bottom of the nutrient solution, connected to an air pump outside the fish pump. So you just put in the nutrients in the solution, and then the roots get the nutrients the plants need directly from the solution.  (more…)
